What is VAO

Founded in 1974, Visual Arts Ontario’s career management and skills development services have been integral to the success of thousands of visual artists across Ontario.
Visual Arts Ontario is a non-profit organization that addresses the interests of artists of all career levels, as well as arts organizations and the art-interested public. VAO provides a wide range of programs and services to it’s Membership including workshops, self-help guides, and on-line training. Programs cover such topics as portfolio presentation, exhibition management, marketing strategies, and business skills for the small business operator. As Canada’s largest and most active association of artists, VAO takes pride in offering its members a variety of vital services to enhance their careers.
Mission Statement
In the belief that visual artists are vital to the community, the purpose of Visual Arts Ontario is to provide training, create opportunities and facilitate awareness for its members so that they possess the resources to fulfill their career goals and be acknowledged for their value to this society.

Visual Arts Ontario is not a government agency. It is a membership driven, not-for-profit arts service organization. Visual Arts Ontario’s greatest strength is its membership.
Aims And Objectives
The following objectives are reflected in all areas of programming and services.
- To create professional opportunities and self-sufficiency for visual artists across Ontario. This is done through the provision of professional and skills development training, information and special services.
- To engage visual artists who are traditionally under-serviced for reasons of geography, gender, race, or linguistic distinctions and provide access to professional development services.
- To promote government, corporate and community support, and awareness of, the visual arts.
- To forge links between the visual arts and both the informal and formal education systems.
