This is your opportunity to meet one-on-one with an experienced VAO Project Officer. Whatever your professional question or challenge, the Project Officer will analyze your situation in detail. What works, what doesn't; appropriate opportunities; step by step how-to's; useful tips - whatever it takes to get you going.
This is a program unique to Visual Arts Ontario that a great many artists find extremely valuable. They like the personalized attention to their portfolio and their problems. Many come back again and again as their careers develop.
In person, by email or phone. Your choice. Only $40/hour for members. ($80/hour for non-members). Most appointments last 1 hour.
To book an appointment: Personal Consultations are given on Wednesdays, Thursdays and Fridays, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Contact VAO 2 weeks in advance to book the time most convenient to you.

Consultation Topics
Over the years, VAO has provided engaging and informative "In the Community" events for a great many groups. List of topics: There is no "formula" presentation for this program. Each event is customized to suit the needs of the audience. Here is a list of topics to help you get started on thinking what would be best for your community. Remember, this list is not meant to be exhaustive or restrictive. VAO will happy to develop an event just for you.
PORTFOLIO DEVELOPMENT
Your portfolio is your most important tool in communicating your artwork to the art world. This presentation covers producing the contents of a portfolio, formatting, and packaging it to get your work the attention it deserves.
PHOTOGRAPHING YOUR WORK
Learn the process of capturing your 2D and 3D art on camera. Learn how to set up your digital camera and lighting to ensure professional-quality reproductions.
DIGITALLY IMPROVING YOUR DOCUMENTATION
Learn how to manipulate your digital images like a pro in Adobe Photoshop. Whether you want to adjust your image resolution or touch up your photographs, this workshop will teach you essential finishing touches.
MARKETING YOUR ART
How does an artist come to be well-known and critically recognized? What establishes their legitimacy in the world of art? How do these factors contribute to sales? Learn how to identify key audiences for your artwork, and the different ways to market yourself.
MARKETING ART ONLINE
The internet presents a myriad of opportunities to bring awareness to your artwork: Websites, emails, and social networking are some of the marketing tools available today. Learn how to navigate these possibilities to create an enduring and effective online marketing strategy.
PACKING AND SHIPPING
You have invested so much effort in finding galleries, clients, and art fairs; now to make sure your art gets there. This session deals with packaging your work safely, shipping, and customs.
GRANT WRITING
Maximize your chances of getting that grant! This presentation helps artists discover how to find granting opportunities and how to write a successful application including project descriptions and budgets.
VAO in the community
Does your art community, association or school need some help or information? VAO will come to you and provide custom professional development workshops tailored to suit your needs. Anything and everything that relates to career management for artists: marketing, portfolio presentations, finding opportunities at a distance, etc. VAO will work with a co-ordinator or focus group in your community to determine your exact needs and the best format for an event.
Contact VAO for a quote on presenting a workshop. Single events last 2 to 3 hours, and feature an experienced presenter along with appropriate A/V support and handouts. The audience can range from 15 to 150. Emphasis is placed on providing detailed answers to individual and group questions. Panel discussions, or events requiring specialized expertise (e.g. lawyers, accountants, professional photographers) are priced separately.
